Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS): Causes, Symptoms, and Natural Support

Common Symptoms of PCOS

Many women begin searching for answers due to changes in their menstrual cycle. The most common symptoms include irregular or absent periods, extremely heavy or prolonged bleeding, and lower abdominal pain or cramping. Fertility challenges are also common due to disrupted ovulation.

Beyond menstrual changes, PCOS often presents with androgen-related symptoms. These include excessive facial or body hair, acne, hair thinning, or male-pattern hair loss. Skin changes such as darkening around the neck, underarms, or groin, as well as skin tags, are also common signs and are closely linked to insulin resistance.

What Is Actually Happening in PCOS?

PCOS involves the development of multiple cysts on the ovaries, often driven by elevated testosterone levels. In most cases, this increase in testosterone is a downstream effect of insulin resistance.

When insulin levels remain elevated due to unstable blood sugar, the ovaries are stimulated to produce more testosterone. Over time, this disrupts ovulation, menstrual regularity, and hormone balance.

Although PCOS is sometimes categorized into different “types” — such as inflammatory, post-pill, or adrenal — most cases involve insulin resistance and inflammation at the root.

How PCOS Is Diagnosed

A diagnosis of PCOS is typically made when two of the following three criteria are present:

  1. Irregular or absent menstrual cycles
  2. Signs of elevated androgens (such as excess hair growth or hair loss)
  3. Ovarian cysts visible on ultrasound

Having irregular cycles alone does not automatically indicate PCOS, as other hormone imbalances can create similar symptoms.

Blood Sugar and Insulin Resistance

One of the most overlooked aspects of PCOS is blood sugar regulation. Blood sugar issues do not always appear as consistently high glucose levels. Instead, many women experience rapid spikes followed by crashes, creating a constant demand for insulin and stress hormones.

This pattern, known as dysglycemia, can occur even in women who are lean and physically active. Over time, this instability contributes to rising insulin and testosterone levels, worsening PCOS symptoms.

Markers such as fasting insulin, hemoglobin A1C, and other metabolic indicators can provide insight into this pattern, even when standard labs appear “normal.”

The Role of the Liver and Gut

Hormones must be properly broken down and cleared from the body. This process relies heavily on liver detoxification pathways and a healthy gut.

When the gut is inflamed or disrupted due to food sensitivities, infections, or imbalances, the liver becomes overburdened. This can prevent the effective clearance of excess estrogen, testosterone, and stress hormones, allowing them to recirculate in the body.

Supporting gut health and liver detoxification is often a critical step in restoring hormonal balance.

Supporting PCOS Naturally

The most effective approach focuses on three foundational areas:

1. Blood Sugar Balance
Eating regular meals, prioritizing protein, reducing processed foods, and avoiding constant snacking can significantly stabilize insulin levels.

2. Hormone Detox Support
Adequate nutrients, reduced toxin exposure, and proper liver support help the body clear excess hormones efficiently.

3. Reducing Inflammation
Addressing gut health, managing stress, and choosing appropriate exercise supports overall hormone regulation.

Strength training and moderate-intensity exercise are generally beneficial, while excessive endurance cardio may worsen symptoms for some women.

Final Thoughts

PCOS is not simply a condition to manage with symptom suppression. It is often a reversible pattern driven by blood sugar instability, inflammation, and impaired hormone clearance.

When those root factors are addressed, many women experience meaningful improvements in cycles, symptoms, and overall health.
