Many people feel like their body is constantly running on empty. They wake up tired, rely on caffeine to get through the day, and crash in the evening.
While the term adrenal fatigue is debated in conventional medicine, the concept describes something we commonly see: a dysregulated stress response system.
Understanding the Stress Response
Your adrenal glands produce hormones that help regulate stress, including cortisol.
Cortisol helps control:
• energy production
• inflammation
• blood sugar
• immune function
• sleep and wake cycles
In a healthy rhythm, cortisol is highest in the morning and gradually declines throughout the day.
What Happens When Stress Becomes Chronic
When stress becomes constant—whether from work, illness, lack of sleep, or emotional stress—the body may struggle to maintain a healthy cortisol rhythm.
Over time, this can lead to symptoms like:
• persistent fatigue
• difficulty waking up
• brain fog
• cravings for sugar or salt
• feeling wired but exhausted
• sleep disturbances
Instead of a balanced rhythm, cortisol may become too high, too low, or irregular.
Why Stress Isn’t Just Emotional
Stress on the body doesn’t only come from psychological factors.
Physical stressors can include:
• chronic infections
• gut inflammation
• nutrient deficiencies
• blood sugar instability
• poor sleep
When multiple stressors stack together, the body’s stress response system can become overwhelmed.
Supporting the Body’s Stress System
Recovery involves helping the body regain a healthy stress rhythm.
That often includes:
• improving sleep quality
• stabilizing blood sugar
• reducing inflammatory foods
• supporting gut health
• managing chronic infections
• improving stress resilience
Instead of pushing the body harder, the goal is to restore balance so the stress system can function normally again.
